China Move Reflects Sensitivity on Pollution - Wall Street Journal

By CARLOS TEJADA For the second time in a month, an industrial project in China has been canceled after protests over pollution. The WSJ's Deborah Kan speaks to reporter Brian Spegele about why officials may be caving into public demand. BEIJINGâ€"The cancellation over the weekend of a second Chinese industrial project in a month following fierce environmental protests demonstrates the government's growing sensitivity to China's pollution problems. Officials in the coastal community of Qidong in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu said Saturday that they would stop construction of a pipeline intended to dump wastewater from a Japanese-owned paper mill into the sea. Worries about pollution sparked protests early Saturday that the state-run Xinhua news agency said drew thousands. US men lead after preliminary round of gymnastics; Japan, China falter - Seattle Post Intelligencer (blog)

The preliminary round of gymnastics ended with the U.S. men on top of the standings, with a score of 275.342. They are followed by Great Britain with 272.420, Japan with 270.503, and China, the favorites going in, with 269.985. Americans Danell Leyva and John Orozco led in the all-around. It was an odd day of gymnastics, as favorites faltered and unknown gymnasts stepped up. Kohei Uchimura, the defending, three-time world champion in the all-around, fell on the high bar and pommel horse. Jonathan Horton, the lone returner from the U.S. bronze medal-winning team, fell on pommel horse and parallel bars. The prelims allow one dropped score per rotation, but China had to count some of their worst scores on pommel horse because so many gymnasts stumbled. But the U.S. took the lead with steady performances, even on the events where they had previously struggled. All Orozco, Leyva and Sam Mikulak hit their pommel horse routines. They also brought in big numbers on their best events. T...

Beijing mayor set for promotion amid flood scandal - The Seattle Times

BEIJING â€" Beijing's mayor is apparently still on track to be promoted to China's powerful decision-making body despite public questioning of the city government's handling of floods that left at least 37 dead. Mayor Guo Jinlong and one of his vice mayors resigned, state media reported Wednesday, in what is likely a routine reshuffling. The announcement came as more rain was forecast to hit Beijing and amid signs that the death toll from last weekend's storms could jump higher. Saturday's massive flooding was a major embarrassment for China's capital, which spent billions of dollars modernizing the city while apparently neglecting its drainage systems. State media, analysts and ordinary netizens have piled on criticism of the city's handling of the crisis and its lack of preparedness. Outgoing Mayor Guo had already been tapped for a promotion to the city's top position as Communist Party secretary, so his resignation was not unexpected. ...
