China sending woman into space to test module

JIUQUAN, China (AP) â€" Three Chinese astronauts â€" including the first Chinese woman to be sent into space â€" have arrived at a spacecraft launch site for the country's latest and most ambitious space mission.

The liftoff of Shenzhou 9 is scheduled for 6:37 p.m. (1037 GMT) Saturday. State-run China Central Television is broadcasting the launch live.

Female astronaut Liu Yang and her two fellow crew members will dock the spacecraft with a space module that is a key step to building a space station. They will work there for about a week.

There was a sending off ceremony ahead of the launch.

The chairman of the National People's Congress standing committee, Wu Bangguo, told the crew: "The country and people await your victorious return."
